One of the beauties of living in Spain is your ability to access some of the most incredible wine you'll ever taste, for a price you won't believe. We aren't wine connoisseurs, but we do enjoy a good bottle and tried many varieties from our local market in Barcelona that ranged from 1.50 - 10 Euros per bottle. Wine is a huge part of the culture of many Spaniards. From a cool glass of white mid day paired with some sharp aged cheese, to a dry red enjoyed on the terrace in the company of friends while laughing and conversing for hours on end.
The vast majority of wineries across Spain are of high quality, and have very quaint atmospheres because many of them are located in old castles, estates, or stone farmhouses (casa rurals) in the countryside. This past fall, we ventured out with two of our closest friends to one of these wineries hidden away in the countryside outside of Barcelona called Oller Del Mar. This castle, vineyard, and wine cellar sits only a few miles away from the famous Montserrat mountain, which you can see peeking out over the grape vines on the horizon.
For 5 Euros we were given a tour of their beautiful property, cellar, and enjoyed a tasting of three delicious wines while we sat around an old wooden table in their cobblestone covered tasting room. Our favorite of the three was from a 50 Euro bottle made from their famous red Picapoll grape, grown locally at Oller Del Mar vineyards.
We loved this winery experience and would highly recommend it! If you're in or around Barcelona for any reason and want a fun winery experience, add Oller Del Mar to your list, and while you're there, stop at Montserrat for a visit!
